Southgate
1801 Lombard Street
Southgate is named after Namdaemun, the Great South Gate of Seoul, South Korea’s national landmark. It has a double meaning as the restaurant is located on 18th and Lombard, basically the south entry to the heart of Philadelphia, Center City, and Rittenhouse Park. Southgate provides a unique, non-traditional Korean American take on classic Korean flavors and contemporary street foods with a high-quality craft beer and cocktail program. The food is not too precious, not too pretty, and really good. The owner, Peter Hwang, is constantly trying to evolve the restaurant. When he first opened, there was nothing remotely like it in the city. Today, he has transitioned from a focus on education (explaining kimchi) to trying to satisfy an increasingly sophisticated and knowledgeable diner.
While at Southgate, be sure to try:
- The Noona: Their newest cocktail is a spin on a vodka gimlet. Using house-made strawberry syrup and muddled mint for a perfect summer cocktail
- The Seoul Sour: Fresh egg white whiskey sour using citron preserve topped with grenadine! -The Long-hot Burger: 8oz bulgogi beef burger, roasted Korean chili peppers, over easy egg, bacon, citrus honey soy
- Bao buns: beef, pork, or tofu & mushroom
- The Bossam: Braised pork belly, served with banchan, salted cabbage, saamjang, and rice
Check out their Happy Hour from open until 7:00 PM, daily.
